The annual high proof edition of LALO has become a much-anticipated offering each autumn, as the brand showcases what it can do by making changes to its core blanco recipe.
The 2025 version was voted Best High Proof Blanco in The Tequila Report Readers Choice Awards, and I scored it 90 points in my review. That one is 50% ABV, and uses Champagne yeast in fermentation, as is always the case with LALO. I liked that 2025 version better than the stronger, 54% ABV initial batch from 2024.
This year, LALO brought the strength down even more, to 48%, but it’s noteworthy that it’s distilled to proof; no water is added.
The big change this year is that shredded, cooked agave fibers, “bagazo,” were included for 72 hours in the fermentation tanks. This is a labor-intensive technique used by several craft tequila brands to boost agave essence, as those strands of agave contain un-extracted sweetness.
I tried this 2026 batch side-by-side with the 2025.
In the glass, last year’s version is a bit brighter, with possibly a little more filtration applied before bottling.
I find this year’s high-proof to be substantially more subtle and rounder on the nose. I get sweet potato, orange marmalade, and an earthy soil/minerality note. The 2025 offered more aromatic punch with a very noticeable lemon/lime and brine character.
Body is similar on both editions, but I’d argue the 2026 is slightly more viscous with a juicier mouthfeel. Unexpected, as body often correlates with ABV.
The bagazo makes its participation known in the flavor, as this year’s batch offers a sweeter and richer experience. More of a roasted agave, spices, and nuts combination, and actually quite a bit different than the 2025. If you are able, do the side-by-side yourself!
I prefer the finish on this new batch. It’s longer, less bracing, and more harmonious.
Overall, I prefer the aroma of the 2025 edition, but I like the flavor and finish better on the new 2026 LALO High Proof Blanco. If you have a chance to try it before it inevitably sells out, give it a go.
