The top-ranked tequila brand in The Tequila Report's summer 2026 Top 150 brands list is Cascahuín, with a score of 9.9 out of 10. G4 is second at 9.8. Fortaleza is third at 9.7.

Below that, the field tightens fast. Nine brands tie at 9.5. Thirteen tie at 9.1. The distance between the best tequila and the 40th-best tequila is smaller than most people assume. This truly is the golden age for the availability of great tequila.

Every score comes from the same place: 15 members of The Tequila Report reviews panel, scoring independently on a 100-point scale. No brand paid to be included.

How was this list created?

Fifteen members of The Tequila Report reviews panel each scored more than 350 tequila brands on a 1 to 100 point scale.

For every brand, we threw out the highest score and the lowest score. The remaining scores were averaged. That average was converted to a 1 to 10 point scale, which is the score you see above.

Throwing out the extremes matters. It strips out the reviewer who adores a brand and the reviewer who cannot stand it, and leaves you with the panel's actual center of gravity.

Who scored the tequilas?

The Tequila Report reviews panel: 15 reviewers who taste and score tequila brands independently.

Reviewers score independently and individually. They do not see each other's numbers, so no single palate can steer a result.

Also, some reviewers do work with certain brands to organize tastings, etc. No reviewer was allowed to give any score to a brand who has compensated them for anything in the past.

Why isn't my favorite tequila brand on this list?

There are two very different reasons a brand might be missing.

The first reason is obvious. Plenty of tequila brands were scored by our panel and simply did not receive consistently high enough scores to make the top 150 list.

The second reason is eligibility. A brand only qualifies for the Top 150 if at least seven of our 15 reviewers has tasted it. Below that, we do not have enough scores to publish a number we would stand behind mathematically.

So there are genuinely high-quality tequilas that are not on this list yet. Some are new brands. Some are still small. Some are sold in only a few states. They may be ranked in the next edition of this list in the Winter of 2027. In fact, more than 20 brands are included in this edition that were not included in the original list published in early 2026.

Does a high score mean every bottle from that brand is great?

Not necessarily.

These scores evaluate the brand as a whole. They reflect the panel's overall assessment of what a brand delivers across their range.

Inside almost any brand, individual expressions vary. A brand can make an outstanding blanco and a merely fine añejo. A 9.1 brand score does not promise that a specific bottle in front of you is a 9.1. But should be used as a solid, directional guide especially when you’re confronted with a brand you don’t know at all.

If you want to know about one specific bottle, use the reviews section on The Tequila Report, where bottles are scored individually.

What is a NOM number, and why is it on this list?

The NOM is the four-digit number identifying the producer of the tequila Every bottle of tequila carries one, and it is printed on the label.

We include it because it is a great way to discover new tequilas you may like. If you enjoy a brand from a particular distillery (NOM) chances are high that you’ll like other tequilas made there.

For our NOM leaderboard, and a complete reveal of what NOMs mean (and don’t) and how all of that works, visit this article:

What is the scoring scale?

A 10-point scale, shown to one decimal place. It is converted directly from the panel's trimmed 100-point average.

On this list, scores run from 9.9 at the top to 7.3 at position 150. That compression is deliberate and real. A 7.3 tequila is not a bad tequila. It is the 150th-best-scoring brand out of more than 350 evaluated.

Can a brand pay to be on the list?

No. There is no paid placement, no submission fee, and no advertiser consideration in the scoring. Brands do not see their scores before publication and cannot request changes.

The Tequila Report does have brand partners, which help keep our website and newsletter free and our advertising to an absolute minimum. However, partners of The Tequila Report receive zero preferential consideration in the creation of this Top 150 Tequila Brands list.

How often is the Top 150 updated?

Twice a year.

Scores change as reviewers taste more, as brands revise their recipes or create new expressions, as brands change distilleries, as new brands emerge, and as smaller brands are tasted by enough reviewers to qualify for the list.

What other lists are available?

To help consumers make the best possible tequila buying decisions, The Tequila Report publishes a number of other lists.

Our biggest and most well-known is our Ultimate List of Craft Tequila Brands, which includes 232 brands that have declared that they do not use additives or a diffuser in the creation of their tequila and sell less than 300,000 bottles in a six-month period, based on Nielsen scan data.
