La Historia de Nosotros shares “the story of us,” and it’s a story worth experiencing. Conceived as a college project on sustainable tequila, now with female-led distillation, Nosotros is doing things its own way.
Brand owners Carlos Soto and Michael Arbanas met in college in California. Carlos was studying business entrepreneurship, where he first pitched his idea for a sustainable tequila brand. After graduation, the partners decided to make a go of it.
Business was slow for these young entrepreneurs until winning Best Tequila at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition changed everything.
As a Costa Rican squash athlete who fell in love with tequila during his travels to Guadalajara, Carlos made sure to represent both countries’ heritages with the brand’s toucan logo.
But you’ll also see the owners’ love for California, outlined cleverly in the toucan’s wing, a nod to where they attended school and where they base Nosotros’ headquarters. I love those small design details!
Nosotros supports strong farming practices, including crop rotation. Their bottle uses 100% recycled glass, with its label made from agave fibers. They also donate to the Toucan Rescue Ranch in Costa Rica.
After 10 years producing at their prior location, Nosotros moved distilling to Hacienda Casa Macías (NOM 1621) in Tequila, Jalisco. They invested in their new distillery as a joint venture so they could make the exact enhancements they wanted.
They were also able to bring Citlali Ovalle on board at the new facility, one of a small but mighty group of female master distillers.
Nosotros Blanco has a few notable production details. It starts with a 50/50 blend of Highland and Valley agave, is fermented with German champagne yeast, and focuses on the center “heart” of the distillation rather than using any heads or tails—helping create a very clean profile.
Aroma: Bold citrus, with hints of hay and vanilla.
Flavor: Agave, earthy, herbal, and white pepper.
Finish: A pleasant initial tingle that fades quickly, leaving a lingering herbal trail. Not too light or too hot, it stays right in the middle.
I find the contrast between the citrus-forward aroma and the earthy flavor very interesting, and it seems to support the brand’s use of both Highland and Valley agave. This citrusy, earthy combination would make for a killer tequila mojito!
The tequila coming out of Nosotros’ new distillery is definitely a step up from the original.
