If you are looking for a purpose-driven tequila, Mijenta should be on your list.
The brand’s name comes from Mi Gente, meaning My People - aiming to bring people together. Mijenta is a leader in sustainability, as the first certified B-Corp tequila, and one of the few with a flavor profile developed by a female maestra tequilera - the legendary Ana María Romero.
Mijenta gives back to the land and community by ensuring their agave doesn’t use herbicides or pesticides, allowing a portion of agave to grow mature quiote to improve crop biodiversity, using labels made from agave waste and bottles from recycled glass, and supporting multiple other non-profits with like-minded goals.
A great way to try Mijenta is to begin with their blanco. It is made at NOM 1499 in Arandas, in the southern Highlands of Jalisco.
Aromas start off floral and fruity. I pick up flowers, lime, and melon, followed by agave, minerals, a touch of honey, and white pepper.
Flavors tell the same story - albeit more agave forward to start, followed by white pepper, lime, wet stone, and honey. This has a nice creamy mouth feel with a light peppery finish.
With an approachable profile, layers of aromas and flavors to enjoy, and a healthy sustainability focus - Mijenta can be a great tequila to share and educate friends about tequila brands that represent more than just alcohol.
It’s also widely distributed, so should be easier to locate than some of the other craft brands.
