Flecha Azul does celebrity tequila differently. Founded in 2020 by business executive Aron Marquez and professional golfer Abraham Ancer, the brand took on greater prominence and distribution circa 2022 after a significant equity investment from famed actor and entrepreneur Mark Wahlberg. It's made at the Orendain distillery in the town of tequila (NOM 1110), home to the eponymous Orendain and Gran Orendain brands, as well as the ultra-luxury Komos tequila.
From the start, Flecha Azul has been a three ingredients tequila, but for quite a long time the agave cognoscenti assumed the brand was additive-laden, as so many other celebrity-backed tequilas have chosen the "sweeter" route.
The marketing does have some traces of pandering to the novice drinker, including "Harvested by Hand" on the label (all tequila is harvested by hand). But all-in-all the issue with Flecha Azul isn't ownership or marketing, it's the flavor. It's not, by any measure, a BAD tequila. But for $50 give or take, there are many blanco options I'd reach for first. The combination of vanilla and smokiness just comes off as awkward to me, at least in this batch.
Aroma: faint with cut grass, black pepper, raw vegetables, alcohol
Flavor: white pepper, flowers, smoke, vanilla
Finish: fairly short, with the final note being tingly alcohol with a cinnamon and smoke overlay.
