El Tesoro de Don Felipe offers the perfect blend of traditional tequila production made for widespread availability. Under the stewardship of legendary master distiller Carlos Camarena for decades, the torch has recently been handed off to his talented sister Jenny Camarena. Made in Arandas at the famous La Alteña distillery which has operated since 1937, El Tesoro is crafted with care.
Highland agave is cooked in stone/brick ovens and crushed with a massive stone tahona—a mini version of which is represented in the distinctive bottle topper.
El Tesoro is one of few major producers to ferment with agave fibers in the tank. They are also one of the only to distill to (80) proof with no water added after distillation. These purposeful decisions showcase the full flavor of the agave.
El Tesoro tends to age their tequilas on the longer side, with the extra añejo averaging 4-5 years in American oak ex-bourbon barrels (1-2 years longer than most XAs).
Aromas on the extra añejo present light agave, flowers, vanilla, honey, cinnamon, and a touch of melon.
Flavors continue that profile with cooked agave, oak, orange peel bitters, cinnamon, caramel, and earthy notes. This XA is creamy in the mouth and finishes with a pop of pepper and slight bitter oak.
El Tesoro produces one of the classic extra añejos everyone should try. It’s hard to go wrong with a balanced profile that manages to still allow the agave to peek through despite lengthy barrel aging, wide availability, and fair pricing.
Quality tequila delivered in a beautiful package with distinct tahona bottle topper make this an excellent gift idea too!
