Valor is a purpose-driven, woman-owned tequila founded by Christiane Maertens, with a notable commitment to donate 10% of revenue (not profit, revenue!) to worthy causes.
This significant donation goes directly to the Gente Buena Foundation to support clean water, medical care, and community well-being in the extremely underserved tequila-producing regions of Mexico.
Community-based assistance is what Christiane Maertens has built her career on. She is now bringing that focus to the people in Mexico who make tequila production possible.
Now let’s talk tequila, specifically Valor Reposado!
I was privileged enough to visit the Familia Landeros (NOM 1599) distillery where Valor tequila is produced in the tequila Valley. Here they use single estate agave on the family property.
Master distiller René Carranza has given this reposado the familiar NOM 1599 signature.
On the nose, it opens with a slight malolactic funk that recedes, revealing cooked agave, grassy vegetal notes, citrus, black pepper, and a touch of caramel.
The palate delivers more cooked agave, pronounced vegetal character, tobacco, and a hint of orange peel.
This is aged four months in American white oak at the distillery barrel room. Valor’s flavor profile seems to be polarizing, you either truly enjoy it, or the "vegetal funkiness" is not your palate.
The main drawback for me is the relatively shorter finish, though the core flavors are clearly present and well defined. For my palate, I enjoy this tequila and will purchase it again!
