Tapatio is an iconic tequila from one of the most respected distilleries in the industry. Produced at La Alteña (NOM 1139) founded in 1937 by Don Felipe Camarena, and now led by Jenny Camarena, Tapatio stays true to its traditional roots.
The classic packaging has long been known for its old-school charm. Now, the brand is looking to keep up with the times, rolling out a new bottle with a modern label and a cork that replaces the old screw top. The tequila itself remains as traditional as it gets.
Tapatio Reposado strikes a great balance between fresh agave character and oak influence. It is lightly aged 4–8 months in ex-bourbon barrels, allowing the agave to remain the star of the show.
Nose: Cinnamon, floral notes, caramel, black pepper, and cooked agave.
Taste: Soft mouthfeel with baking spices, light oak, black pepper, and sweet cooked agave.
Finish: Warm baking spices linger as the agave sweetness gradually fades.
For me, this is the benchmark of what a reposado tequila should taste like. It’s an iconic brand that stays true to its heritage and the style of the expression. If you’re new to tequila, Tapatio Reposado is absolutely a bottle worth trying.
