Santo Fino is a celebrity tequila from Sammy Hagar and Guy Fieri, but don’t let that fool you. Sammy has been around tequila for a long time, and Guy knows flavor.
The result is a tequila that backs up the hype with what’s actually in the glass. There’s a reason this took first place in an Agave Matchmaker blind tasting of some of the year’s best high-proof tequilas.
Right from the start, the nose on this tequila grabs your attention. I get a lot of cooked agave, cinnamon, and a big burst of citrus. The orange peel, orange zest, and fresh citrus notes are really strong and jump right out of the glass.
When taking a sip, the first thing that hit me is the sweetness from the cooked agave. There’s a lot of orange flavor, some lime zest, and even a little bit of salinity that keeps everything balanced. For a high-proof tequila, it’s surprisingly easy to drink.
The heat shows up for a second, but then it quickly fades away and leaves behind a nice sweet finish.
Going back for another sip is where this tequila really shines. I start picking up more floral notes, a little of that Highlands minerality, and then a nice cinnamon spice. The finish brings some pepper and peppercorn notes that stick around just long enough to want another taste.
What I like most about this Santo Fino high proof is that every sip seems to reveal something a little different. It’s complex without being difficult to enjoy.
