Despite being made exclusively in Mexico as a Domination of Origin-protected product, most tequila is consumed in the United States of America.

Upwards of 60% of all tequila produced ends up being exported to the USA, a vast ocean of agave goodness that dwarfs even the amount consumed in Mexico itself.

According to data published monthly by the Consejo Regulador de Tequila (CRT) that tracks tequila production and export, 2025 was a very good year for our beloved beverage.

Through November, overall tequila production was up 12% between 2024 and 2025. That’s a good sign following the frightening 17% dip between 2023 and 2024.

Tequila exports to the USA were essentially the same between 2024 and 2025, illustrating that the growth in the global tequila market is absolutely happening outside North America.

Note that the figure for Mexico is approximate because CRT does not calculate actual consumption or sales of Tequila in the country. We attributed 145 million liters to Mexico in 2025 because that’s the gap between total tequila created and total tequila exported.

However, tequila is not always exported in the year it was created (based on aging), and tequila - perhaps a lot of it - is sitting in tanks waiting to be exported in 2026 or later, instead of being consumed by Mexican consumers.

Consequently, the share of overall tequila consumption for Mexico is probably somewhat lower than this methodology suggests, but the nation is still the clear number two in worldwide tequila drinking.

Where Is the Next Tequila Boom?

The United States’ COVID-fueled tequila boom has largely faded away, with consumption up just a bit over the past two years.

But looking at the 2024 vs. 2025 tequila export data allows us to isolate the big gainers and predict the next tequila boom. Admittedly, when the entire nation consumes just a percent of two of global tequila production volume, “boom” might be overstating the case a bit.

Colombia

WOW! This is where the boom is happening right now. Between 2024 and 2025, tequila exports to Colombia grew by 2.4 million liters, a 133% increase in just one year.

India

Here’s another burgeoning tequila success story from the other side of the globe. While still not a huge volume overall, exports to India jumped 80% in 12 months, approaching 2 million liters.

China

China saw a bump of nearly 47% in tequila importation between 2024 and 2025, a good sign for the industry overall, given the size of the potential customer audience there.

Australia

G’day Mate! The Aussies are discovering tequila, with total exports to the island nation jumping by almost one million liters, good for 39% growth between 2024 and 2025.

France

The French are leading the way in European tequila growth, witnessing a 25% year-over-year jump in tequila importation.

Great Britain

Nearly one million additional liters were exported to Great Britain in 2025 compared to 2024, a 24% year-over-year increase.
