Polanco is owned by MXCO Polanco LLC with a mission of producing organic tequila. The driving force behind the brand is co-owner Chris Miano, along with his father and brother as partners.
Chris has more than 20 years’ experience in the tequila world, much of it with “premium brands” such as Don Julio, Casa Dragones, and Diageo’s Reserve portfolio and other premium spirits brands.
One significant day, he was at a distillery and asked, “Why is high fructose corn syrup being delivered?” The question and lack of answer shaped Chris and drove him to be the proponent of additive-free tequila that he is today.
Polanco is an attempt to apply all the industry taught Chris, both what to do and what needed to change.
The vision for the brand is inspired by the Polanco neighborhood in Mexico City. This neighborhood is known for historic architecture, contemporary design, parks, galleries, amazing restaurants, and influential bars.
The concept is respecting Mexican traditions without being trapped by nostalgia. The Polanco neighborhood is contemporary and relevant; that is where Polanco tequila’s identity comes from. Respect for tradition, with an eye to innovation and contemporary thinking.
This progressive thinking and brand representation did come with its own challenges, however.
The brand’s slogan, “Espíritu de la Ciudad de México,” caused issues with the CRT (regulatory body) due to the denomination of origin, as the wording could not suggest that the tequila was made in Mexico City!
Once the slogan was approved by the CRT—after they demonstrated that the phrase represented only the cultural identity of the brand and not the actual location of production—came the challenge of obtaining B Corp and organic certifications.
B Corp certification is no small thing. You have to prove your corporation meets standards for social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. This required documentation and third-party verification—a long process.
In the end, you have a brand which is influenced by and respectful of, but not limited by, tradition. Innovation, contemporary thinking, and modern design are the pillars of this brand, and the proof is in the aromas and flavors this tequila delivers.
Speaking of aromas and flavors, let’s enjoy some tequila, shall we?
Nose: Dried fruit and ripe citrus fruits, honey, pepper, barrel spices, and a hint of cocoa.
Palate: Cooked agave, barrel spices, coconut, cinnamon, cocoa, honey, citrus fruits and some wood from the barrel, vanilla, and a tiny bit of caramel.
Finish: The delicious finish is medium in length and very peppery.
