Juan Lobo tequila is founded by country music star Jon Wolfe, and made at NOM 1414 - Feliciano Vivanco y Asociados, home to many excellent craft tequila brands.
Juan Lobo has a very traditional flavor profile, and Jon Wolfe sings traditional country music. It's a great marriage. This tequila is aged 22 months in American oak whiskey barrels.
On the nose, I detect fermenting musto, cooked agave, a hint of charred American white oak, and candied orange. There are several strong scents with a rustic quality.
I taste some earthy cooked agave upfront, along with a mix of black pepper, dark citrus oils, charred oak, American whiskey, cinnamon, and cooked agave. The finish is nice; it’s sweet and spicy.
This is an affordable sipper that could convert some whiskey drinkers to aged agave spirits.
