Inspiro Tequila is owned, operated, and inspired by women. Even the bottle is designed to fit more easily in a woman’s hand.

Mara Smith, owner of Inspiro, is a strong proponent of women-owned businesses and sustainability. In this profit-dominated corporate world, this is something to be admired in a CEO.

Inspiro is a certified B Corp. This means it is certified to meet the highest possible standards in social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

For Mara, it is important that Inspiro remains approachable to all consumers, especially her female consumers, not just the connoisseurs. Her tequila is meant to be enjoyed at a formal tasting as well as a backyard BBQ. If you want a tequila soda with her blanco, then DO IT.

The tequila itself is also an interesting story. Mara loves rosé wine and loves tequila, so she wanted to age her blanco to become a reposado in rosé wine barrels, however, those barrels are very rare.

They found some in the south of France from a rosé winemaker that does not use them more than once, making the barrels available. Mara purchased them and had them shipped to California and then on to Mexico, a very expensive start to a tequila.

On the first lot, master distiller Ana María Romero Mena double-barreled the tequila, first aging in new rosé barrels, then again in ex-Pinot Noir barrels. This resulted in a darker-colored and heavier tequila than Mara had intended. Inspiro ended up leaving the batch in those second barrels for over a year to see if this could become something to enjoy as an añejo. By the way, that limited-run añejo is also delicious!

For later runs, Inspiro used only the rosé barrels and aged for 3-4 months to make a lighter tequila. The Rosa Reposado was born!

Inspiro harvests six- to eight-year-old agave to ensure a proper Brix (sugar content) level in the piña for their rosa. They use a proprietary yeast blend during fermentation designed to enhance the fruit-forward flavor profile.

You immediately get those fruity notes on the rosa’s aroma, a truly enjoyable experience. I noticed cooked agave, honey, and stone fruits like cherry and plum, along with subtle notes of butterscotch and cinnamon.

The tasting delivers cooked agave, some caramel, and more cherry and plum. I also found cinnamon and pepper on the palate.

Inspiro is an approachable and enjoyable tequila for everyone, not just women!
