El Mexicano is owned by the Bañuelos family. In 1973, Don Féliz and son León were behind the creation of the Cazadores brand before selling it to Bacardi in 2002. The family then began their new tequila brand, El Mexicano.

El Mexicano shows pride in three family generations on the bottle, celebrated by three concentric arches. The arches are a theme at the distillery as well.

Starting with the aromas: there is some light cooked agave and barrel spices, a sweetness like orange peel, some alcohol on the nose, white pepper, light cinnamon, and vanilla. I very much enjoyed the nose on this tequila once it opened up. I strongly encourage you to let it rest after pouring for a good 10 minutes.

El Mexicano Reposado is aged for 90 days in a blend of new American and French oak barrels, and you can really taste them on the palate in a pleasant way. The reposado sips quite easily, with spices and cinnamon notes, orange peel, and cooked agave.

That French oak really lingers on the palate, and I am here for it!

This is an easy sipper, but the alcohol does stick in the back of the throat. I would say it is simplistic and has a lot of barrel notes. A whisky drinker’s tequila, if you will.
