El Ateo is a Total Wine exclusive produced at the family-owned Plantaciones Tequilana distillery (NOM 1635) in Arandas.

While it’s distilled in Jalisco, the agave is sourced from Guanajuato, a region known for producing tequilas with bright citrus, tropical fruit, and earthy character.

The cooked agave is crushed using a traditional tahona—a two-ton volcanic stone wheel—which helps extract the agave fibers and brings out vibrant, expressive flavors.

This reposado spends 2–5 months resting in used American white oak bourbon barrels. The barrel influence is well balanced, adding layers of chocolate, cinnamon, and baking spice without completely covering up the character of the agave. The combination of Guanajuato-grown agave and bourbon oak works really well together.

Nose: Oak, cinnamon, honey, cooked agave, and minerality.

Taste: Sweet oak, vanilla, cooked agave, butterscotch, and cinnamon.

Finish: Brown sugar, toasted oak, baking spice, chocolate, and lingering minerality.

Overall, this is a solid reposado and a great addition to the lineup. If you enjoy a more oak-forward tequila, this one is worth checking out. The barrel is definitely present, but there’s still enough agave character to remind you what you’re drinking. I’d love to see El Ateo release a high-proof reposado in the future.
