Dos Locos Blanco

Dos Locos, “the spirit of the party,” is produced at the same distillery as Arriesgado, with the same “artesanal” mark on the label. It also identifies as an “ensamble,” so let’s dive into this interesting production story.

This budget-friendly blanco is produced primarily with autoclave-cooked agaves, roller mill extraction, stainless steel fermentation, and distillation in stainless steel pot stills.

But here comes the artesanal part: 2% of the blend comes from agaves cooked in a wood-fired oven made of clay and stone, crushed by hand using a wooden mallet, fermented in open-air wooden vats, and distilled in copper pot stills.

Note that this blanco does not represent the traditional definition of an “ensamble,” where multiple agave types are used, like we see commonly in mezcal. This is 100% blue Weber agave, but it is blended from tequila made using two different production methods—an ensamble of sorts.

Aromas: Herbal, a touch of minerality, light pepper and spice, a very faint whiff of smoke, with some citrus.

Flavors: Light sweetness, citrus, herbal, not overly complex.

Finish: Medium finish, again, those herbal, citrus notes linger.

This is a fun brand! Distillery owner Roberto Real Reynoso and his wife Sandra are actually the locos characters on the front of the bottle. Dos Locos fills a void in the market, producing a budget-friendly, authentic tequila, constructed to hit a certain price point and demographic. It clearly hits the mark.

Dos Locos is just starting to hit shelves and will be expanding rapidly across Total Wine, ABC, and more in the coming weeks.
