Dos Hombres Reposado

Celebrity tequila? It’s not that simple—this is a well-made, reasonably priced reposado.

Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul have stepped into the world of tequila. Dos Hombres built its name with a mass-appeal mezcal and is now expanding into tequila with a new lineup.

Under the watchful eye of master distiller Julio Cova, Dos Hombres released its blanco earlier this year and is now introducing its reposado.

Dos Hombres starts with its core blanco, which includes just three ingredients—agave, yeast, and water. The agave is cooked using a blend of 75% autoclave and 25% stone/brick oven.

Julio incorporates a longer, three- to four-day fermentation process, which adds a little more complexity to the aromas and flavors.

Aged for three months in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels that previously held Four Roses Bourbon, then stabilized for an additional month in stainless steel, the tequila has just the right amount of oak, spice, and sweet cooked-agave character.

This reposado delivers a clean, lightly spiced, sweet expression.

Aromas: On the nose, there is an immediate note of sweetness and light cooked agave.

Flavors: The palate shows a lot of sweetness, which I assume is due to the first fill of these barrels. There is a dried-fruit note of apricot alongside sweet cooked agave, balanced by light vanilla and cinnamon spice.

Finish: The finish offers a light peppery note, followed by spice and that sweetness—though I do not detect any artificial notes.

The Dos Hombres team is determined to produce a nice, approachable tequila that one could sip or use to elevate a cocktail. In my opinion, the reposado is a step up from the blanco. I could easily sip it neat or enjoy it over a gentleman’s cube with a slice of orange.
