Cierto Tequila officially entered the U.S. market in February 2023, although the vision behind the brand dates back to 2017.
The name Cierto translates to “true” in Spanish. The brand offers the tagline of “pure, natural, true tequila.”
Owned by Elevated Spirits Company, Cierto is made at La Tequileña distillery (NOM 1146) in Tequila, Jalisco.
The brand works with master distillers Enrique Fonseca and Sergio Mendoza, whose families represent four and five generations of agave-growing experience, respectively.
Despite the distillery being located in the Valley, Cierto sources its Blue Weber agave from estate-grown fields in the Atotonilco Highlands of Jalisco, emphasizing individual plant selection and full maturity at harvest.
Cierto’s portfolio is divided into two lines: Private Collection and Reserve Collection, each offering blanco, reposado, añejo, and extra añejo expressions.
The brand’s production approach combines copper pot and Coffey column distillation, while its aged expressions incorporate French Limousin oak and select tequilas from the Fonseca family’s private collection.
The aromas on this blanco unapologetically start with agave, a nice lactic funk, and fruits. The rest of the aromas are much lighter and consist of floral notes that make me think of mums, a pinch of black pepper, celery, grapefruit, cinnamon, green bean, and vanilla.
Once this hits the tongue, you are immediately hit with sweet agave, minerals, that floral mum note, and pepper. Flavors of unripe banana, lime, cinnamon, grass, and soil are present in the background.
The viscosity is pleasant. The finish is nice with lingering notes of honey, cream cheese, pepper, and mint.
If you like a little funky and easy sipping that comes in a fancy bottle, this may be one to check out.
Cierto claims to be and has even trademarked itself as “The Most Awarded Tequila in History,” but I feel like there are better options at the same NOM 1146 distillery.
