Cayéya is a sustainability-focused tequila brand produced at Destiladora de Agave Azul (NOM 1424) in San Juanito de Escobedo, just southwest of Tequila, Jalisco.

Their artistry isn’t just in the bottle; it is the bottle itself.

The glass bottles are handcrafted from recycled materials at a family-owned artisanal glass factory in Jalisco, with corks, hang tags, and labels also made from recycled materials.

While the blanco’s glass bottle is made from recycled Coca-Cola bottles, the reposado’s is made from recycled Pacifico beer bottles, giving it an amber color.

Cayéya’s focus on sustainability is summed up nicely by its mission: “Take care of the land and the land will take care of you.”

The brand focuses on small-batch production through its single-barrel program. Today, though, I’ll be tasting the blended reposado, aged for six months in a combination of American and French oak barrels.

Aromas include flamed orange peel, earthy toffee, caramelized agave, and rose petals, with subtle hints of wet minerals and grapefruit.

I taste sweet cooked agave, light caramel, and minerals with slight salinity, followed by black pepper with a hint of anise.

The sweeter flavors and black pepper carry through to the finish.

Overall, the nose is nice, and the flavors are balanced and cohesive, but the body is noticeably thin.

This reposado would be a nice sipper after a big meal because it has a pleasant, subtle aroma and sweet flavors that aren’t cloying.
