Formerly owned by three celebrities—George Clooney, Rande Gerber, and Mike Meldman—Casamigos was acquired by spirits giant Diageo and is now made at Diageo’s NOM 1609 distillery in the town of Atotonilco el Alto, in the Highlands of Jalisco. The distillery produces only Casamigos tequila.

What started as something fun for Clooney and his friends to drink privately at their homes turned into something much bigger. Now, for many consumers, Casamigos has become synonymous with tequila.

While it is loved by partygoers both young and old, it has also received its share of hate.

Plenty of celebrities have since joined the tequila industry, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Casamigos says its agave piñas are cooked in “a process that includes traditional brick ovens,” which is notable for such a large-scale operation. After distillation, the tequila rests in stainless-steel tanks before bottling.

Aroma: Hay, yeast, very faint cooked agave, a lingering plastic aroma, ethanol, vanilla and, almost hidden beneath the sweet vanilla, bitter prune and cherry.

Taste: Sweet vanilla, cake batter, butter and lactic notes, with a bitter finish.

Finish: Vanilla with a warm mouthfeel and not much afterward.

Personally, I feel like it presents higher than its 40% ABV. This was, at one point, something I reached for, but I probably wouldn’t reach for it now. Whether you like it or not, it’s truly for you to decide.
