Let me be straight with you the way I always am: the Adictivo World Cup Edition Doble Reposado is not a tequila for me. It's not built for someone who chases terroir, hunts craft certifications, and wants agave front and center in every sip. But I've been doing this long enough to know that my palate isn't the only one that matters and being honest about what a tequila is, who it's for, and whether it delivers on that promise is exactly what this badge means.
Adictivo comes out of NOM 1653 in El Arenal, Jalisco. The "Doble Reposado" designation refers to eight months of aging in French white oak barrels. The World Cup Edition wraps all of that in a globe-inspired collectible bottle with gold and green detailing which, depending on your relationship with display-worthy packaging, is either the whole point or beside the point entirely.
Here's what you need to know going in: Adictivo has a sweetness profile on this bottle and on everything Adictivo makes. Whether that's the barrel doing all the heavy lifting or something else in play, I can't tell you definitively. What I can tell you is what it tastes like, and what kind of drinker it was built for.
Nose: Vanilla leads hard immediately and unambiguously. Caramel follows, but tons of sweetness overall. There's no cooked agave presence, it's softer and sweeter than I'm used to.
Palate: Rich, silky, and sweet genuinely dessert-level sweet with no presence of cooked agave. The mouthfeel is round and full, but no rough edges anywhere which can be alarming. There's a faint white pepper note that arrives late, the only real hint that distillate exists underneath all that barrel character. I kept searching for agave and for something earthy, mineral, or vegetal to cut through and it never came. For my money, the agave got lost somewhere between the still and the bottle. For someone who finds most tequilas too harsh or too raw, that's exactly the point.
Finish: Long, warm, and sweet to the end. No harshness, nothing that outstays its welcome but the sweetness never fully resolves. It stays. If you enjoy that, you'll want another pour. If you don't, you'll be reaching for something with more edge.
Here's my honest verdict as The Tequila Cop: this isn't the tequila I'm recommending to the person who already loves agave. It's not built for us. The agave is a background note in a profile that's primarily telling a story of something unknown, wrapped in a bottle designed to sit on a shelf, get gifted, and generate conversation at a World Cup watch party. On all of those fronts, it delivers. The packaging is genuinely striking. The pour is smooth in a way that won't challenge anyone unless you're a real agave nerd. And at its price point, someone getting this as a gift is going to feel like they received something special.
I can respect what it's doing because I understand who it's talking to. The person who doesn't yet drink tequila neat. The whiskey drinker who needs a softer on-ramp. The sports fan who wants a bottle with a collectible design. Adictivo knows its audience, and it serves that audience well. That's not nothing. It just happens to be a different audience than mine.
If you're in this for the agave, for terroir, for craft, for bottles that earn their complexity the hard way than keep walking. But if you've got someone in your life who wants into tequila through the sweetest, smoothest, most approachable door available, this World Cup edition is a fair choice. Just know what you're buying before you badge it.
