Insólito Tequila has one of the better value añejo options on the market. On the shelf, it’s also easy to spot thanks to Insólito’s distinctive bottle design and bold color palette.
The brand is backed most notably by the country band Midland, alongside Pete Kelly, the CEO of Spirits Innovation Partners, and the Herrera family, who own and operate the distillery where the tequila is produced.
Production takes place at NOM 1558 at the Premium de Jalisco Distillery under Master Distiller Alberto Herrera. The tequila is made from a blend of 80% highland and 20% lowland Blue Weber agave, with this añejo aged for 18–24 months in brand-new American oak barrels. The result is a pronounced barrel influence and a sweeter, whiskey-inspired profile.
Nose: Oak leads, with butterscotch, toffee, honey, fruit notes, and a touch of nutmeg.
Taste: Sweet, barrel-forward flavors dominate with oak, vanilla, caramel, toffee, marshmallow, and cinnamon-like baking spice.
Finish: Oak and caramel linger alongside almond and a noticeable black pepper spice on the tongue.
Overall, this is an oak-forward añejo with sweet whiskey barrel character. The extended time in virgin American oak leaves less agave presence than some other añejo options, and the profile isn’t the most complex. Still, it’s an easy sipper that delivers impressive value. It’s also the kind of añejo you can easily mix, working well in a Tequila Old Fashioned or even a Carajillo without hurting the wallet.
