This brand definitely stays under the radar. Although I’m a huge fan of Felipe Camarena and pretty much any tequila he even thinks about making, Don Vicente from El Pandillo (NOM 1579) in Jesús María really stands out.
I’ve been a fan of the brand for a few years now, especially the Fuerte releases over the last couple of years.
But let’s talk about the extra añejo, because there’s a lot going on in this flavor profile, and I’m here for it. This extra añejo is aged for three years in used American white oak bourbon barrels.
Nose: I immediately get an aroma of stone fruit and orchard fruit. As it opens up, cinnamon and allspice start to come through, along with subtle floral notes, almost like orange blossom.
Taste: Cherry and apple carry over from the aromas, followed by savory notes of tobacco and sage. The finish is long, with a burst of flavor that tingles the roof of my mouth and provides a beautiful coating. As it lingers, I get subtle leather and more tobacco, with a touch of orange crème, hints of crème brûlée, and a peppery bite.
Finish: I love the finish. The flavors linger with a rich, buttery mouthfeel that makes you want to sit with it a little longer.
Overall, I usually have to be in the mood for an extra añejo. I tend to want them on a fall evening or when the weather is a little cooler, but this one hits differently. I love that the barrel doesn’t cover up the cooked agave or overpower the beautiful flavors already present.
This is an amazing extra añejo.
