Cimarrón Tequila has built a reputation as one of the better bang-for-your-buck blancos out there, especially when you spot the one-liter bottles on shelves.

Produced by Enrique Fonseca at Tequileña Distillery (NOM 1146) in the town of Tequila, this is not produced as an artisanal tequila offering, but instead it’s created for value and volume. Still, it sticks to the fundamentals of agave, water, and yeast, while bringing more personality than you’d expect at the price.

What stands out is the flavor profile. It’s bolder and a little more complex than many competitors in its range. Though in my experience, the profile doesn’t resonate with everyone. It seems to be either a love-it or leave-it profile:

Nose: Cooked agave, olive brine, light fruit, and green pepper.

Taste: Cooked agave leads into lactic fruit notes, olive brine, with hints of lemongrass and anise.

Finish: Olive and pepper linger, rounded out by a light floral sweetness.

There’s a definite “funkiness” to it, likely from those lactic and briny notes, that won’t land for everyone. Personally, I’m a fan. I could sip it if options were limited, but it really shines in cocktails.

If you can grab the one-liter at a good price, it’s a great bottle to keep stocked for mixing without hurting the wallet.
