"Smooth" is the word people use most when they describe a tequila they love. It's also the word that gets abused the most.
For some drinkers, smooth means no burn. For others, it means a soft, rounded texture. For a lot of big brands, it means sweetness added after distillation to cover up shortcuts.
This list is about the real thing. These 55 tequilas taste smooth because of how they're made, not because something was added to disguise how they're made.
Most of the bottles here are blancos. Aging in oak can soften almost anything, but a blanco has nowhere to hide. If an unaged tequila goes down easy, that's the agave, the cooking, the fermentation, the filtering, and the distillation doing the work.
A few aged expressions made the cut, too, for readers who want smooth with a little more vanilla and oak.
Every bottle here is one we'd happily pour for a friend who says, "I don't really like tequila."

Q: What makes a tequila smooth?
Smoothness comes mostly from production choices. Fully cooked agave, careful fermentation, and a distiller who cuts away the harsh heads and tails of each run all produce a softer spirit. Proof matters too. A tequila bottled at 80 proof will usually feel gentler than one at 45% ABV or higher (but not always).
Q: Does smooth tequila mean it has additives?
Not necessarily, but sometimes. Mexican rules allow small amounts of additives like glycerin, sugar syrup, caramel coloring, and oak extract without disclosure on the label. Some brands use them to fake smoothness. A tequila that's smooth without help is the goal, and that's what we gave you here.
Q: Is blanco, reposado or añejo tequila smoother?
Aged tequila can taste “smoother” because time in oak rounds off the edges and adds sweeter notes like vanilla and caramel. But a well-made blanco can be every bit as smooth, with brighter agave flavor. That's why most of this list is blanco.
Q: Why doesn't expensive always mean smooth?
Price reflects marketing, packaging, and aging as much as quality. Plenty of affordable tequilas on this list drink smoother than celebrity bottles that cost twice as much. Look at how a tequila is made, not what it costs.
