There’s something special about a tequila that carries a family story, and 4 Copas Organic Tequila Añejo is a great example.
The brand was founded in 1997 by Héctor Galindo Miranda and was later acquired by the De Anda family, who still own it today. The De Andas are fourth-generation agave growers, so their connection to the plant and their focus on agave quality is about as authentic as it gets. And honestly, that attention to agave really comes through in the glass.
Originally produced at Tequilera la Quemada (NOM 1457) in El Arenal, Jalisco, 4 Copas became the first USDA and EU-certified organic tequila, as well as the first certified Kosher tequila, sometime between 2006 and 2007.
Production later moved to Tequilas Las Americas (NOM 1480) in Amatitán in 2014, then to its current home at Hacienda de Oro (NOM 1522), also in Amatitán, in 2021. Today, Master Distiller Iliana Partida leads production.
The añejo from NOM 1522 hasn’t been out long, so make sure to read your label to know if you’ve got the current product.
This 80-proof añejo took home Double Gold at the 2026 Agavos Awards. It is also listed by The Tequila Report as a Craft Tequila Brand, reflecting its self-declared commitment to tequila made without artificial sweeteners, colors, or flavors.
The agaves are cooked in stone/brick ovens, then roller-mill macerated. The aguamiel, or “honey water,” is open-air fermented in stainless steel tanks with natural yeast before being distilled in stainless steel pots. From there, it spends 20–22 months resting in American oak barrels.
Aromas of sweet roasted agave lead the way, followed by caramel, toasted vanilla, raisin, and dried fruit.
On the palate, the first sip brings a nice sweetness that quickly opens into juicy plum and plantain. As the flavor develops, raw cacao, tobacco, and light baking spice start to show up. There’s a really nice progression here, without the oak taking over. It’s very nicely balanced.
The texture is soft and smooth with a pleasant medium-length finish that leaves you wanting another sip. I found myself wanting to refill my glass more than I probably should!
I really enjoyed this añejo. It has enough complexity going on to make you slow down and appreciate it, but it’s still approachable enough that I’d happily pour it for friends who are just starting their tequila journey. There’s a lot of care behind this bottle, from the De Anda family’s generations of experience growing agave to Iliana Partida’s work in bringing it all together.
4 Copas Tequila Añejo is a beautifully made tequila with a lot of character. This is one I’ll gladly keep on my shelf.
