Started in 1989, Patrón has become a ubiquitous brand dominating the bar scene with big budget marketing and an easy-drinking spirit. Their most popular expression should be familiar to you, Patrón Silver—an unaged blanco bottled in a distinctive squat bottle with bulbous cork topper. Patrón stands tall among other mega-brands with their use of traditional production methods at scale, avoidance of sweeteners or other enhancing agents, and commitment to sustainable practices. The Hacienda Patrón distillery ONLY makes Patrón tequila, where they are running more stone tahonas than any other tequila producer. Sounds pretty good so far, right? Let’s have a taste.

Aromas start off with citrus and mint, a pop of alcohol, and some dry earthy notes. Flavors follow with cooked agave, citrus, black pepper, brine and other minerals. The finish is short with a wisp of pepper. In fact, the overall experience is relatively flat -nothing too bold in good or bad ways.

While Patrón Silver’s sipping experience is uninspiring, I’ve been known to grab a glass in a pinch at a non-tequila bar. The muted citrus and pepper profile works more to their advantage in shots or cocktails where a small tequila burst without much complexity can still be appreciated.
