Launched in 2025 in California, León Y Sol seeks to carve out a niche in tequila’s “affordable luxury” segment. They’ve signed partnerships with music and live entertainment companies, and seek to introduce the brand to people where standby “club” tequilas like Don Julio 1942 are often the default.
León Y Sol is crafted at Casa Tequilera de Arandas (NOM 1499) in the Highlands. The distillery makes a few dozen other brands, most notably Comisario and Mijenta. Additive-free, León Y Sol Blanco is aerated and cold filtered to remove some of the bite. It received a Gold medal at the 2026 Agavos Awards.
Aroma: Light caramel, very savory and herbal. Quite a bit of pear and peach. Intriguing.
Palate: Plush and silky in the mouth. Slight sweetness, especially at first, followed by notes of rosemary and thyme, cooked agave, and pear.
Finish: Short-to-medium, with a lingering sweetness. Is a little bit more hot in the throat than the aeration might suggest.
Overall, a fine effort from a new brand. It works well as a sipper and has enough backbone to work in a cocktail.
