Señora Leona is a tribute to Leona Vicario “Mother of the Homeland” a patriot, a journalist and one of the first women to be recognized as a heroine of Mexico.

Leona was one of the most important people in the Mexico’s War of Independence. In a world where woman were told to keep silent, she used her voice and wealth to support the fighting. She was part of a secret alliance, gathering intelligence, raising funds, and smuggling supplies to the rebel fighters against the Spanish invaders.

Señora Leona Blanco tequila is slow cooked for 14 hours in autoclave ovens, tahona crushed, fermented in open containers with natural yeast, and then double distilled in copper pot stills.

This is one of the many projects distillery owner Fernando Perez is producing. You may be familiar with Laelia, or 818, other tequilas that are being produced at Grupo Solave (NOM 1607) in Amatitán. They definitely deliver here with a well made Blanco priced below $30 for 750ml.

They will also be offering this expression in a liter format, targeted to bars and restaurants. This Blanco, with its slightly elevated ABV is perfect for cocktails. At this price point and quality I can see it being offered in many restaurants. A Blanco well done!

Aromas: Sweet cooked agave, fruity notes of citrus and orchard fruit, a light spicy note.

Flavor Profile: The cooked agave is on the palate, citrus, light spice, with an earthy herbal note.

Finish: Medium finish, lingering cooked agave, with a light sweetness.
