Purasangre tequila is a heritage brand rooted in Jalisco’s highland agave tradition. The name Purasangre, meaning “thoroughbred,” reflects a focus on quality and lineage.
The brand is produced at the historic Tequileña (NOM 1146) distillery guided by Enrique Fonseca, a fourth-generation agave grower whose family has been farming agave in Los Altos since the late 1800s. In 1989, Fonseca acquired the distillery from Bacardi and became a quiet but influential figure in the rise of premium tequila.
Long before tequila became a lifestyle product, Purasangre emerged in the early 1990s as a brand centered on land, patience, and agave heritage. Its identity is shaped by generations of farming knowledge and a long-term vision rooted in tradition.
This añejo has a light nose with familiar aged notes that is very pleasant. It opens with oak, vanilla, spices and toffee that are well balanced. Aromas of fruit, berries, agave, honey, and pepper to finish.
On the tongue, I am immediately hit with vanilla, oak, cinnamon ,and pepper that is warm and sweet. Notes of black tea blend that remind me of herbal black tea, leather, herbs, honey, minerals, and citrus followed.
The finish is average, with notes of brown sugar, apple, and pepper. Slightly viscous mouthfeel with a short yet warm finish.
