A unique bottle can be either a very good sign or a very bad one. Thankfully, in this case, it’s a very good sign. Made in the Highlands of Jalisco, at Hacienda El Olvido (NOM 1580) in Jesús María, Mosto is a brand I only discovered last year—and one that officially hit the Georgia market this April.
What makes this reposado stand out is how well it balances traditional reposado characteristics while retaining some of the vibrant qualities I look for in a blanco. Rested for five months in Willett bourbon barrels, the color remains surprisingly light, which lets the agave character continue to shine through.
Aroma: Butter, sweet cooked agave, light corn, cinnamon, and a gentle bourbon influence.
Palate: Cooked agave leads the way, followed by pear, green apple, minerality, earthy citrus, grapefruit, nutmeg, wood chips, and light licorice. There’s a pleasant balance between sweet and earthy notes, with hints of black pepper, Tennessee plum, cherries, and bourbon whiskey throughout.
Finish: Oaky and warming, with the wood influence lingering nicely and a warmth that stays with you long after the sip.
This is a bottle worth seeking out. It’s complex enough to enjoy neat while still being approachable in cocktails. The sip is simply too good to pass up. I hope to see Mosto in more bars, restaurants, and stores—it’s a tequila that deserves more attention.
