Is this just another celebrity moment? Keep reading.
Marcado 28 Tequila’s name was inspired by a meeting with co-founding partner, Ron Roy and his daughter Kaleigh. He noticed a new tattoo she had.
When asked to show the tattoo in it’s entirety, she revealed beautiful, colorful Monarch butterflies. She told him it was for Jackson (her brother, his son) who passed away years ago. At Jackson’s service, 100 Monarch butterflies were released into the sky as a way to honor his soul taking flight.
This moment inspired the partners at Spirits That Rock. The partners include Michael Voltaggio (Food Network’s Triple Threat Titan and Top Chef winner), his brother Bryan Voltaggio (multiple James Beard Award nominee and Food Network’s Tournament of Champions winner), and the Romo family, long-time agaveros and one of the most storied families in the world of tequila.
Their joint vision was for a tequila centered around celebrating tattoos, tradition and culture. Marcado means “marked.” And they sourced that from tattoo culture… something permanent, something personal, something that tells a story. Every bottle of Marcado 28 has an ink story.
The artwork on Marcado 28 Tequila Blanco pulls inspiration from an alebrije, a mythical creature made from a fusion of different animals, brought to life with bold patterns and vibrant, eye-catching colors.
Produced at Autentica Tequilera (NOM 1502) in Tequila, Marcado 28 Tequila Blanco uses lowland agave cooked low pressure in autoclaves, macerated by roller mill, fermented in open air stainless steel tanks and distilled in stainless steel pots. Their water source is deep well and this Blanco has an ABV of 40%.
On the nose, sweet cooked agave right up front, followed by some bright citrus, a drizzle of honey, salty air and asparagus. It’s soft, inviting and pulls you in for that first sip.
In that first sip, that sweetness shows up, but is a little lighter than the aroma. The second sip is where it opens up. More honey and cooked agave stay front and center. Citrus keeps it lively, and there’s a light vegetal note and jalapeño spice that reminds you this started in the field.
The finish is medium, clean and easy. Overall, this is an approachable Blanco. Drink it neat, or let it shine in a cocktail.
Michael Voltaggio didn’t just show up for a photo op on this one. He knows a thing or two about flavor and his world -lass palate helped guide the profile of Marcado 28 Tequila.
So no… this isn’t just a “celebrity tequila moment.” It’s thought out and intentional. Like someone actually cared what ended up in your copa. And you know I’m always gonna say it… Drink what you love, but know what’s in your glass.
